Question 1 Report

Calculate the range of temperature for the station

Answer Details

The range of temperature for a station is the difference between the highest and lowest recorded temperatures over a given period. It is calculated as:

\[ \text{Range} = \text{Maximum temperature} - \text{Minimum temperature} \]

From the climate data table provided, the monthly temperatures (in °C) are:

MonthJanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNov
Temperature (°C)1620222325282830272623

Scanning across the row, the highest temperature is 30°C (recorded in August) and the lowest temperature is 16°C (recorded in January).

Substituting into the formula:

\[ \text{Range} = 30°C - 16°C = 14°C \]

The range of temperature for the station is therefore 14°C.

A common error is confusing the range with the mean (average) temperature or reading the wrong row (such as rainfall instead of temperature). Always identify the correct data row first, then pick out the single highest and single lowest values before subtracting.
