Name the most important industrial mineral of Ghana
Answer Details
Gold is Ghana's most important industrial mineral. Ghana was historically known as the Gold Coast precisely because of its abundant gold deposits, and gold mining remains the country's leading mineral industry and a major source of export revenue.
Ghana is one of the largest gold producers in Africa, with major mining operations at Obuasi (operated by AngloGold Ashanti), Tarkwa, and other sites in the Ashanti and Western regions. The gold mining sector is the backbone of Ghana's mining industry and contributes significantly to government revenue and employment.
While Ghana also has deposits of bauxite (at Awaso and Nyinahin) and diamonds (at Akwatia), these are of secondary importance compared to gold. Bauxite mining feeds into aluminium smelting at the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) smelter in Tema, but the scale and economic impact of the gold industry far exceeds that of bauxite or diamond mining in Ghana.
