(a) Two safety precautions when using a craft knife:
- Always cut on a cutting mat placed on the workbench. [1] The cutting mat protects the bench surface from blade damage and, crucially, provides a non-slip surface that prevents the blade from skating off the material and into the user's hand. A hard bench surface can deflect the blade unpredictably.
- Use a metal safety ruler rather than a plastic ruler to guide the cut. [1] A craft knife blade can easily slice into a plastic ruler edge, causing the blade to ride up over the ruler and cut the user's fingers. A metal ruler has a hard edge that the blade cannot cut into, keeping the blade tracking along the intended cut line.
