Question 1 Report
A designer is improving the strength and rigidity of a wooden garden gate frame. The rectangular frame is made from softwood timber and currently flexes when pushed. The designer needs to add structural reinforcement to prevent the frame from distorting under load.
(a) State the name of the structural method used to strengthen a frame by adding diagonal members across it. [1]
(b) Name the flat reinforcing plates that can be fixed to the corners of a frame to increase its rigidity at the joints. [1]
(a) The structural method of adding diagonal members across a frame is called triangulation. [1]
A triangle is inherently rigid because its shape cannot be distorted without changing the length of at least one side. By adding diagonal braces across a rectangular frame, the rectangle is divided into triangles, preventing the frame from racking (distorting into a parallelogram shape) under load. This is a fundamental principle in structural engineering used in roof trusses, bridge frameworks, tower cranes, and timber-framed buildings.
(b) The flat reinforcing plates fixed to the corners of a frame are called gusset plates. [1]
Gusset plates are typically made from plywood, steel, or aluminium and are screwed, bolted, nailed, or welded across a joint to increase its rigidity. They work by spreading the load over a larger area at the joint and by resisting the rotational forces that would otherwise allow the joint to pivot. In timber construction, plywood gusset plates are commonly used to reinforce the apex and eaves joints of roof trusses.
