(a) The movement of a pendulum in a clock is oscillating motion. [1] The pendulum swings back and forth through a fixed arc, repeatedly reversing direction at each extremity. It does not travel in a straight line or complete a full circle; instead it sweeps through the same arc continuously, converting potential energy to kinetic energy and back at each swing.
(b) The movement of a drill bit in a pillar drill is rotary motion. [1] The drill bit spins continuously around a fixed axis (the spindle centre line). The electric motor drives the chuck, which holds the bit, in an unbroken circular path at a set speed (rpm). Every point on the drill bit follows a circular path about the axis of rotation.
(c) The movement of a jigsaw blade during cutting is reciprocating motion. [1] The blade moves repeatedly up and down in a straight line through exactly the same path. Unlike oscillating motion (which sweeps through an arc), reciprocating motion follows a linear track, reversing direction at each end of the stroke. The motor converts its rotary output through a crank mechanism to produce this linear back-and-forth cutting action.
