Two types of information that must appear on a food product label by law:
- List of ingredients - all ingredients must be listed in descending order of weight, allowing consumers to know exactly what is in the product and to identify any substances they wish to avoid. [1]
- Best before date or use by date - this tells the consumer the date by which the product should be consumed for optimal quality (best before) or safety (use by), protecting consumer health. [1]
Other legally required information includes: nutritional values (energy, fat, protein, etc.), manufacturer or distributor name and address, net weight or volume, allergy warnings (highlighting major allergens such as nuts, milk, gluten), storage instructions, and country of origin.
