Question 1 Report
Fig. 4 shows four products. Complete the table by naming a suitable metal for each product.
It is used a lot. It can be fixed if it breaks.
The design is simple but works well. The top is flat and smooth. It can be cut to size with a saw. It works well for this job. The plastic can be bent into shape when hot. It keeps its shape well over time.
The plywood can be shaped using welding or cutting. The dimensions of the product have been determined by the needs of the intended user.
| Product | Suitable metal |
|---|---|
| 1. Roof flashing | |
| 2. Manhole cover | |
| 3. Garden gate | |
| 4. Church bell |
Naming a suitable metal for each product:
| Product | Suitable metal | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Roof flashing | Lead | Lead is extremely malleable and can be easily dressed (shaped by hand) to fit tightly around chimneys, roof joints, and other awkward junctions. [1] It is also highly resistant to corrosion from rainwater and atmospheric conditions, making it long-lasting in an exposed roofing application. Zinc is also acceptable. |
| 2. Manhole cover | Cast iron | Cast iron is very hard and wear-resistant, capable of supporting heavy vehicle loads without deforming. [1] It can be easily cast into the complex shapes needed for manhole covers (including grip patterns and frames) and is resistant to compression forces. |
| 3. Garden gate | Mild steel | Mild steel is strong, tough, and relatively inexpensive. [1] It can be welded, bent, and forged into the bars, frames, and decorative elements of a gate. When galvanised or painted, it resists outdoor corrosion. |
| 4. Church bell | Bronze (an alloy of copper and tin) | Bronze produces excellent resonance and a clear, sustained tone when struck, which is essential for a bell. [1] It is also resistant to corrosion and has been the traditional bell-making alloy for centuries. |
