Question 1 Report

Fig. 1 shows a coping saw. The saw is commonly used in school workshops for cutting materials to size. It is an important hand tool used in the preparation of materials before assembly. The tool is designed for making accurate cuts in the workshop environment.

It sits on the floor. The parts are all the same size.

It keeps its shape well over time. It is held in a vice while being cut.

The oak provides adequate strength while keeping the overall weight low. It needs to withstand impact and abrasion during normal use.

Answer Details

Types of cut a coping saw can make that a tenon saw cannot [2]

A coping saw has a thin, narrow blade held in a deep U-shaped frame. This blade can be rotated within the frame, allowing it to follow non-linear paths through the material. By contrast, a tenon saw has a wide, rigid blade with a stiffening strip along its back, which restricts it to making straight cuts only.

Any two from the following, each worth [1]:

  1. Curved cuts - the narrow blade can be steered around curves and flowing shapes that a tenon saw blade is too wide and rigid to follow.
  2. Internal cuts / cut-outs - the blade can be detached from one end of the frame, threaded through a pre-drilled hole in the workpiece, and re-attached, allowing material to be removed from the interior without cutting in from an edge.
  3. Intricate or irregular shapes - complex outlines with tight radii and changes of direction can be followed because the blade is thin enough to pivot within the kerf.
