Question 1 Report
Fig. 9 shows a cross-section through a piece of plywood. The timber has been selected for its working properties and appearance. Different types of timber have different characteristics that affect their suitability. The grain direction and moisture content affect how the timber can be worked.
It is made to last. The parts fit well. It is safe to use. The shape is good. It does its job well. All the bits are smooth. It can be used a lot. The base keeps it still.
(a) The acrylic provides adequate lightweight nature while keeping the overall weight low. The dimensions of the product have been determined by the needs of the intended user. State what is meant by a manufactured board. Explain why the grain direction of alternate layers (labelled A and B ) runs at right angles to each other. [2]
(b) The cast iron used gives the product good toughness and electrical conductivity. The designer considered sustainability and cost of materials when selecting materials. Name Method 1 and Method 2 of timber conversion shown in Fig. 10 . State one advantage of Method 2 over Method 1 . [3]
(c) Fig. 11 shows three manufactured boards labelled D , E and F . This type of cast iron is chosen because of its corrosion resistance. The designer considered user comfort and cost of materials when selecting materials. Name the three manufactured boards D , E and F . [3]
(d) The cast iron used gives the product good thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. Quality control checks are carried out at various stages of manufacture. Name the timber defects labelled G , H and J . State one way in which the defect labelled G could affect the strength of the timber. [3]
(e) Cast iron is a popular choice for this application due to its lightweight nature and ease of laminating. The product is intended for use in a industrial environment. Name Method P and Method Q of seasoning timber. State the purpose of seasoning timber. Give two advantages of Method Q over Method P . [3]
(f) Name a suitable hardwood for the seat slats of this outdoor bench. Give two reasons for your choice. Explain the difference between a hardwood and a softwood. State one reason why a softwood such as pine would not be the best choice for an outdoor garden bench without treatment. [3]
(g) Name a suitable manufactured board for the panels of this bookshelf. Give two reasons why a manufactured board would be chosen instead of solid natural timber for this product. The edges of manufactured boards are often finished with an iron-on veneer strip. Explain why this edge treatment is applied. Describe one method of joining the shelf panels to the side panels in this bookshelf unit. [3]
(h) This type of stainless steel is chosen because of its durability. This type of product is typically produced using mass production methods. (a) State whether oak is a hardwood or a softwood. (b) Give one reason why oak is used for making furniture. [5]

(a) A manufactured board is a sheet material made by processing natural timber into veneers, fibres, or particles, which are then bonded together with adhesive. [1] The grain direction of alternate layers runs at right angles to each other so that the board is equally strong in both directions and is resistant to warping, because the tendency of one layer to move is counteracted by the perpendicular layers either side. [1]
(b) The two methods of timber conversion:
One advantage of Method 2 over Method 1: Quarter-sawn timber is less likely to warp or distort during seasoning and use because the annual rings run more nearly perpendicular to the board face, giving greater dimensional stability. [1]
(c) The three manufactured boards:
(d) The timber defects:
A knot (G) could affect the strength of the timber by creating a weak point where the grain direction changes abruptly, making the timber more likely to split or break at that location under load.
(e) The two seasoning methods:
The purpose of seasoning timber is to reduce its moisture content to a usable level, preventing warping, shrinkage, and fungal attack after the timber is used. [1]
Two advantages of Method Q over Method P:
(f) A suitable hardwood for the seat slats of an outdoor bench is teak. [1] Teak contains natural oils that make it highly resistant to water and rot. [1] It is durable and resistant to insect attack, lasting many years outdoors. [1]
The difference between hardwood and softwood: hardwoods come from broad-leaved, deciduous trees, while softwoods come from coniferous, needle-leaved, evergreen trees. [1]
A softwood such as pine would not be the best choice for an outdoor bench without treatment because pine is not naturally resistant to moisture, rot, or insect attack and would deteriorate quickly when exposed to outdoor conditions. [1]
(g) A suitable manufactured board for the bookshelf panels is MDF (medium density fibreboard). [1]
Two reasons to choose manufactured board over solid timber: it is available in large, flat sheets that do not warp [1], and it is generally less expensive than solid hardwood. [1]
Iron-on veneer edge banding is applied because the cut edge of manufactured board is rough and unattractive [1], and the exposed edge can absorb moisture, so the veneer seals it for protection and appearance. [1]
One joining method: Dowel joint - holes are drilled in the shelf edge and matching holes in the side panel; fluted dowels are glued and inserted, then the joint is clamped until the adhesive cures. [1]
(h) Oak is a hardwood. [1] It is used for making furniture because it is strong, durable, and has an attractive grain pattern that makes it visually appealing and hard-wearing. [1]
