Crude oil (petroleum) is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons with different boiling points. To separate it into useful fractions (such as petrol/gasoline, kerosene, diesel, lubricating oil, and bitumen), fractional distillation is used.
In fractional distillation, crude oil is heated in a furnace until most of it vaporises. The vapour enters a tall fractionating column that is hot at the bottom and cool at the top. As the vapour rises through the column:
Hydrocarbons with higher boiling points condense lower in the column (e.g., bitumen, heavy fuel oil).
Hydrocarbons with lower boiling points rise higher before condensing (e.g., petrol, refinery gas).
The column contains trays at different heights where each fraction is collected.
The other separation methods are not suitable:
Steam distillation is used for heat-sensitive compounds (like essential oils) that would decompose at their normal boiling points.
Fractional crystallisation separates solids from solution based on differences in solubility at different temperatures.
Precipitation is used to separate insoluble solids from a solution by adding a reagent.
