Question 1 Report

Fig. 4.1 shows parallel rays from a distant object entering a converging lens of focal length 15 cm.

diagram

(a) State where the image of the distant object is formed. [1]

(b) State the nature of the image (real or virtual). [1]

(c) State the size of the image compared to the object. [1]

(d) Describe the orientation of the image (upright or inverted). [1]

Answer Details

(a) Where the image is formed [1 mark]

The image is formed at the principal focus (F) of the lens. [1] Parallel rays from a very distant object converge at the focal point after passing through a converging lens.

(b) Nature of the image [1 mark]

The image is real. [1] It is formed by the actual convergence of light rays on the far side of the lens and can be projected onto a screen.

(c) Size of the image [1 mark]

The image is much smaller than the object (diminished). [1] A distant object subtends a very small angle at the lens, so the converging rays form a tiny image at the focal plane.

(d) Orientation of the image [1 mark]

The image is inverted (upside down). [1] Real images produced by a single converging lens are always inverted relative to the object.
