Fig. 1.1 shows light passing from air into water and changing direction. What is the reason for this bending?
The correct answer is the speed of the light changes. Light bends (refracts) at the boundary between two media because it travels at different speeds in each medium. Water is optically denser than air, so light slows down and bends towards the normal. The light is refracted, not reflected. Its colour and frequency remain unchanged during refraction; only its speed and wavelength change.
