The freezing compartment is placed at the top of the refrigerator to exploit convection. Air in contact with the freezer is cooled, which causes it to contract and become denser than the surrounding air. Because it is denser, the cold air sinks downward through the refrigerator, passing over the food stored below and cooling it.
As this cold air absorbs heat from the food, it warms slightly, becomes less dense, and rises back up towards the freezer to be cooled again. This sets up a continuous convection current that circulates cold air throughout the refrigerator without any fan needed.
If the freezer were at the bottom, the cold dense air would simply stay at the bottom and warm air would remain at the top, with very little circulation. Placing the freezer at the top ensures the natural sinking of cold, dense air drives effective cooling of all the food below.
