Question 1 Report
Salts are made when the hydrogen in an acid is replaced by a metal. Table 1.1 shows three common acids.
| Acid | Family name of salt formed |
|---|---|
| hydrochloric acid | ................ |
| sulfuric acid | ................ |
| nitric acid | ................ |
(a) Complete Table 1.1 to give the family name of the salt formed by each acid. [3]
(b) Zinc reacts with dilute sulfuric acid. Complete the word equation for this reaction.
zinc + sulfuric acid → .............. + .............. [2]
(c) State the name of the salt formed when copper(II) oxide reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid. [1]
What this tests: naming the salt families made by the common acids and writing simple reactions of acids.
(a) Completed Table 1.1 [3]
| Acid | Family name of salt formed |
|---|---|
| hydrochloric acid | chloride |
| sulfuric acid | sulfate |
| nitric acid | nitrate |
1 mark each. The family name comes from the acid's negative ion: hydrochloric acid gives chlorides, sulfuric acid gives sulfates, nitric acid gives nitrates.
(b) Word equation [2] zinc + sulfuric acid → zinc sulfate + hydrogen [1 + 1]. A reactive metal displaces hydrogen from the acid, leaving the metal salt in solution.
(c) [1] Copper(II) oxide + hydrochloric acid gives copper(II) chloride (a metal oxide plus an acid gives a salt plus water).
