A gene can exist in more than one version, and each different version is called an allele. Here the seed-colour gene has a green version and a yellow version, so each of these is an allele of that gene. An allele is not the same as a gamete (a sex cell), a chromosome (the whole DNA thread that carries many genes) or a phenotype (the observable feature the allele helps produce).
