The pupil reflex adjusts the amount of light entering the eye to suit the brightness. Moving into a dim corridor means less light is available, so the iris widens the pupil to allow more light to enter and reach the retina, helping you see in the low light. Widening the pupil is not about focusing on near objects (that is the job of the lens) or protecting the lens; it is about controlling light reaching the light-sensitive retina, and in dim conditions the aim is to let more in, not less.
