Question 1 Report

A young child living in a region with very little sunlight is found to have soft, bent leg bones. Increasing which combination in the diet would best help to correct this?

Answer Details

Soft, bent leg bones with little sunlight are the signs of rickets. Sunlight lets the skin make vitamin D, which the gut needs to absorb calcium, and calcium is what hardens bone, so increasing vitamin D and calcium together corrects the problem. Carbohydrate, fat, vitamin C, fibre, protein and water do not harden bone, so the combination needed is vitamin D and calcium.
