Question 1 Report

An egg cell is much larger than a sperm cell. Which statement best explains this size difference?

Answer Details

An egg cell is large because its cytoplasm contains food (energy) stores of fats and proteins that nourish the embryo during its first days before it can obtain nutrients from the mother. It is not larger because it carries more chromosomes (a gamete carries a half set), needs to swim, or has many mitochondria for movement; those describe the sperm's job, whereas the egg is a supply store.
