Answer Details

Denitrifying bacteria break down nitrate ions in the soil and release nitrogen gas back into the air. They thrive in waterlogged, low-oxygen conditions, which is why such soils lose nitrate and become less fertile. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria do the opposite (adding nitrogen compounds to the soil), nitrifying bacteria make nitrates rather than remove them, and photosynthetic bacteria are not involved in this loss. The bacteria responsible for losing nitrate as nitrogen gas are the denitrifying bacteria.
