Question 1 Report
An automated irrigation system is installed on a large farm.
| Component | Role in the system |
|---|---|
| Moisture sensor | |
| Microprocessor | |
| Valve actuator |
(a) Complete the table by describing the role of each component in the irrigation system. [3]
(a)
| Component | Role in the irrigation system |
|---|---|
| Moisture sensor | Measures the current moisture level in the soil and sends this reading to the microprocessor as a digital signal. If the soil is too dry, the reading will be below the stored threshold. [1] |
| Microprocessor | Receives the moisture data from the sensor, compares it with a pre-set threshold value stored in its memory, and decides whether to open or close the water supply. It sends the appropriate control signal to the valve actuator. [1] |
| Valve actuator | Physically opens or closes the water valve in response to control signals from the microprocessor. When opened, water flows to irrigate the crops; when the moisture level is sufficient, the microprocessor signals the actuator to close the valve. [1] |
