Answer Details

(a) A robot is a programmable machine that can carry out tasks automatically. [1] It interacts with the physical world through sensors (to detect conditions in its environment) and actuators (to perform physical actions such as moving, gripping, or welding), and it can operate with a degree of autonomy once programmed. [1]

(b) Four typical characteristics of a robot: [4]

  1. Programmable: a robot can be programmed with instructions to perform a variety of different tasks, and its behaviour can be changed by reprogramming. [1]
  2. Sensors: a robot has sensors (such as temperature, proximity, pressure, or light sensors) that allow it to detect and respond to conditions in its environment. [1]
  3. Actuators: a robot has actuators (such as motors, servos, or hydraulic cylinders) that enable it to perform physical actions and interact with its surroundings. [1]
  4. Autonomous operation: once programmed, a robot can carry out tasks independently, without continuous human control, and can work continuously without breaks or fatigue. [1]
