Question 1 Report
Fig. 9 shows a cross-section of a manufactured board. The item shown is commonly used in design and technology projects. It has been designed and manufactured to meet specific requirements. The choice of materials and construction methods affects the quality of the finished product.
It is made in a shop. The grip stops it from slipping. It is held in place.
The wood can be bent into shape when hot. The edges are smooth and safe to touch.
Aluminium is a popular choice for this application due to its malleability and ease of laminating. This type of product is typically produced using batch production methods.
Name the manufactured board shown in Fig. 9.
The manufactured board shown in Fig. 9 is plywood. [1] The diagram shows multiple thin layers (veneers) bonded together with the grain direction of each layer running at right angles to the adjacent layers. This alternating grain pattern is the defining characteristic of plywood. The cross-lamination gives plywood equal strength in both directions (along and across the sheet), prevents warping, and makes it resistant to splitting. Plywood is made by peeling thin veneers from a rotating log, applying adhesive between them, and pressing the stack together under heat and pressure.
