(a) A thin client is a lightweight computer that relies on a central server (or cloud infrastructure) to perform most of the processing and data storage. [1] It has minimal local processing power, RAM and storage, running applications that are hosted on and executed by the server rather than locally. [1]
(b) Two advantages of thin clients with cloud computing for a company:
- Thin clients are cheaper to purchase, maintain and replace than full desktop computers, reducing hardware costs across the organisation. [1]
- They are easier to manage centrally because software updates, security patches and application installations only need to be applied on the server, not on each individual machine. [1]
(c) Two disadvantages:
- If the network connection or central server goes down, users cannot access any of their applications or data, as the thin client has no local capability to run software independently. [1]
