Question 1 Report

A graphic designer spends most of their working day in front of a computer screen.

(a) Describe two precautions the designer should take to avoid eye strain. [2]

(b) Describe two ways the workplace should be set up to reduce the risk of back problems. [2]

(c) Explain why regular breaks are important for someone who uses a computer for long periods. [2]

Answer Details

(a) Two precautions the graphic designer should take to avoid eye strain:

  • Adjust the screen brightness and contrast to comfortable levels that match the ambient lighting in the room, and position the monitor so that no light from windows or overhead lighting reflects directly on the screen surface. [1]
  • Position the monitor at the correct viewing distance (approximately arm's length) and ensure the top of the screen is at or just below eye level, so the eyes look slightly downward at the screen rather than upward. [1]

(b) Two ways the workplace should be set up to reduce the risk of back problems:

  • Use a fully adjustable office chair with good lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of the spine. The chair height should allow the feet to rest flat on the floor with the thighs roughly horizontal. [1]
  • Position the desk at the correct height so that the forearms are approximately horizontal when typing. If the desk cannot be adjusted, a footrest should be provided to support the feet. [1]

(c) Regular breaks are important for two reasons:

  • Breaks allow muscles that have been held in the same position to relax and recover, reducing the cumulative strain that leads to RSI and back problems. Movement promotes blood circulation and prevents stiffness. [1]
  • Looking away from the screen during breaks gives the eye muscles a chance to rest and refocus at varying distances, reducing eye strain and the headaches associated with prolonged close-up screen viewing. [1]
