[1] This persistent ostinato is one of the most recognisable features of the bolero form. In Ravel's famous Bolero, for example, a two-bar rhythmic pattern on the snare drum continues virtually unchanged from beginning to end, providing a steady rhythmic foundation over which the melody unfolds.

(b) How instrumentation and dynamics create a sense of gradual build-up:

• The composer begins with a solo instrument playing the melody quietly and gradually introduces more instruments in successive repetitions, thickening the orchestral texture. [1] Each repetition of the melody is given to a different instrument or combination of instruments, so the timbral palette expands progressively from a single flute or clarinet to full orchestral forces.
• The dynamics build progressively from pianissimo to fortissimo over the course of the piece, creating a continuous crescendo.
