This alternation is a defining characteristic of the concerto genre, where the contrast between the solo instrument and the full ensemble drives the musical drama.

(b) The type of passage where the full ensemble plays without the soloist is called a tutti. [1] The word tutti is Italian for 'all' or 'everyone'.
