The relative minor key of C major is A minor. [1] Every major key has a relative minor that shares the same key signature. To find the relative minor, count down three semitones (a minor third) from the tonic of the major key: C down to A. Both C major and A minor have no sharps or flats, meaning they use the same set of pitches (the white notes on a keyboard). The difference is their tonal centre: C major centres on C and sounds bright, while A minor centres on A and sounds darker or more sombre.
