[Total: 2 marks]
(a) The process of recreating everyday sounds in a studio to match on-screen action is called Foley. [1]
Foley is named after Jack Foley, a pioneer of the technique in early Hollywood. A Foley artist watches the film footage and physically performs actions to create realistic sound effects that are synchronised with the visual action. These sounds are recorded in a specially equipped studio using a variety of everyday objects and surfaces. Foley is distinct from pre-recorded sound effects libraries because each sound is performed live and matched precisely to the specific movements on screen, giving a more natural and convincing result.
(b) Two sounds needed for this forest scene could include (any two): footsteps crunching on dry leaves as the character walks through the forest floor; footsteps on wooden planks as the character crosses the bridge; creaking wood from the bridge; rustling leaves disturbed by movement; flowing water beneath or near the bridge; bird calls in the forest canopy; or twigs snapping underfoot. [1]
A Foley artist might recreate these by, for example, stepping on dried leaves or cornflakes for the forest floor footsteps, walking on a wooden platform for the bridge, and flexing or twisting wooden objects to simulate creaking planks.
