(a) Two techniques used to create tension in the development section: [2]

1. Modulation through remote or unexpected keys creates harmonic instability. The development deliberately avoids the tonic key, moving rapidly through different keys to prevent the listener from feeling settled. [1]
2. Themes from the exposition are fragmented and developed into new configurations. Short motifs are isolated, repeated in sequences, inverted, or combined, building momentum and intensity. [1]
