The written text of an opera, including all the words sung and the stage directions, is called the libretto. [1]
The word libretto is Italian for "little book." It contains every line of dialogue (whether sung in recitative, aria, ensemble or chorus), along with stage directions that describe the action, scenery and movements. The author of a libretto is called a librettist. Famous librettists include Lorenzo Da Ponte (who wrote for Mozart) and Arrigo Boito (who wrote for Verdi). The libretto is distinct from the musical score, which contains the notation for voices and instruments.
