The steel pan originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is the national instrument of that country. It was developed in the mid-twentieth century from discarded oil drums (barrels). The top of the drum is hammered into a concave shape, and different areas of the surface are carefully shaped and tuned to produce distinct pitches when struck with rubber-tipped mallets. This makes the steel pan a tuned (pitched) percussion instrument, capable of playing melodies and harmonies. Steel pans come in various sizes and ranges, from high-pitched tenor pans that carry the melody to large bass pans that provide the harmonic foundation. Steel pan ensembles (steel bands) are central to Caribbean musical traditions, particularly during Carnival celebrations.
