[Listening extract audio not available in printed QP]
An unpitched percussion ensemble features snare drum, two tom-toms, bass drum and cymbals.
(a) How do the tom-tom parts create rhythmic interest? [1]
(b) Describe the texture created by the combined instruments. [1]
(c) What dynamic effect occurs when the cymbals crash? [1]
[Total: 3 marks]
(a) The two tom-tom parts create rhythmic interest by playing alternating off-beat accents that interlock with each other. Each tom-tom fills the gaps left by the other, so their combined parts form a continuous, syncopated pattern against the steady rhythm of the snare drum. This interlocking approach means that rhythmic energy is distributed across beats and off-beats, creating complexity and drive that a single drum part alone could not achieve. [1]
(b) The combined instruments create a layered rhythmic texture in which each instrument performs a different rhythmic role at a different pitch level. The snare drum provides a steady rhythmic pattern, the two tom-toms contribute interlocking accented patterns at different pitches, the bass drum supplies deep, low rhythmic punctuation, and the cymbals add metallic colour. Because all these parts overlap simultaneously, each with its own distinct pattern and timbre, the result is a thick, complex, polyphonic rhythmic texture built from several independent layers. [1]
(c) When the cymbals crash, the dynamic effect is a sudden loud accent (a forte or fortissimo accent). This provides a dramatic, sharp increase in volume that creates a climax or emphasises a key moment at the end of a phrase. The crash cuts through the overall texture because of the cymbal's bright, sustained metallic tone, making it the loudest and most attention-grabbing sound at that point. [1]
