In the extract, a small group of soloists alternates with the full orchestra. Give the musical term for the small group. [1]
The correct answer is concertino. [1]
In a Baroque concerto grosso, the orchestra is divided into two contrasting groups. The larger body of players is called the ripieno (or tutti), while the small group of soloists is called the concertino. The musical interest of a concerto grosso comes from the alternation and contrast between these two groups: the concertino passages tend to be lighter in texture and more virtuosic, while the ripieno passages are fuller and more powerful. Composers such as Corelli and Handel used this structure extensively. When the question describes "a small group of soloists alternating with the full orchestra," it is describing exactly this concertino-ripieno relationship that defines the concerto grosso form.
