[Total: 2 marks]
(a) A dramatic solo song in which a character expresses inner feelings with orchestral accompaniment is an aria. [1]
An aria is a self-contained piece for a solo singer within an opera, oratorio or cantata. Unlike recitative, which advances the plot through speech-like delivery, an aria pauses the action so that a character can reflect on emotions - love, grief, anger, joy. Arias feature sustained, lyrical melodies and are often the musical highlights of an opera, giving the singer scope for vocal display.
(b) One key difference between an aria and recitative: an aria has a lyrical, sustained melody (often melismatic), whereas recitative follows a speech-like rhythm that is mostly syllabic. [1]
In recitative the vocal line imitates the pace and inflection of natural speech, and the accompaniment is minimal. In an aria, by contrast, the melody is more elaborate and tuneful, the accompaniment richer, and the text-setting frequently melismatic, with single syllables stretched over several notes for expressive effect.
