(a) One technique used in the development section to treat themes from the exposition: [1]
- Themes are fragmented into smaller motifs and developed into new configurations. The composer isolates short melodic or rhythmic fragments from the original themes and manipulates them through repetition, sequence, inversion, or combination with other fragments, creating something new from familiar material.
Other acceptable techniques include: presenting themes in new keys through modulation, combining or inverting themes, using sequences to build momentum, or re-scoring themes for different instruments.
(b) The key structure of the development differs from the exposition because the development modulates through several different and often remote keys, creating harmonic instability. [1] In contrast, the exposition establishes two clearly defined, stable key areas (the tonic for the first subject and typically the dominant or relative major for the second). The development deliberately avoids settling in any one key for long, building tension through rapid modulations that the recapitulation will eventually resolve.
