(a) Two ways Wagner's music dramas differed from traditional Italian opera [2]

Any two of the following (one mark each):

• Wagner used continuous music without clear divisions between arias and recitative. Traditional Italian opera separated these elements distinctly, with recitative for dialogue and arias for emotional expression. Wagner's music flows without breaks, creating an uninterrupted dramatic experience
• Wagner wrote his own text (libretto) as well as the music, giving him complete artistic control. Italian opera composers typically collaborated with a separate librettist who wrote the words
• Wagner's works were much longer than traditional Italian operas, with individual acts sometimes lasting over an hour and complete works spanning an entire evening or even multiple evenings
• Wagner aimed for a 'total work of art' (Gesamtkunstwerk) that combined music, poetry, drama, visual art and stagecraft as equal partners. In Italian opera, the vocal melody took clear precedence over other elements
• The orchestra carried the main musical argument through leitmotifs and complex symphonic writing, rather than simply accompanying the singers as in the Italian tradition

The answer is The Ring Cycle (also accepted: Der Ring des Nibelungen / The Ring of the Nibelung). This cycle consists of four music dramas - Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried and Gotterdammerung - based on Germanic and Norse mythology. A complete performance takes approximately 15 hours spread over four evenings.

(c) One reason Wagner required a specially designed theatre [1]

Any one of the following:

• To accommodate the very large orchestra required for his scores, which could number over 100 players
• To house the concealed orchestra pit (the 'mystic abyss') so the sound would blend and balance before reaching the audience, creating a unique acoustic effect
• To create the right acoustic balance between the massive orchestra and the singers on stage, since conventional theatres could not prevent the orchestra from overwhelming the voices
• The extended length of the works required special facilities for performances lasting several hours

Wagner built the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in Bavaria specifically for this purpose, and it opened in 1876 with the first complete performance of the Ring Cycle.
