Common mistake: Writing that animal cells "have no vacuole." Animal cells can have small temporary vacuoles. The distinction is that plant cells have a large, permanent vacuole filled with cell sap, while animal cells do not.

Biological molecules

The specification requires you to know about three groups of biological molecules: carbohydrates, proteins and lipids (fats and oils). You also need to understand enzymes as biological catalysts.

The three molecule groups

  • Carbohydrates contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Large carbohydrates (starch, glycogen) are built from smaller sugar units (glucose).
  • Proteins contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen (some also contain sulfur). They are built from amino acid subunits.

Enzymes

Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up metabolic reactions without being used up. Each enzyme has an active site with a specific shape that matches its substrate (the lock-and-key model). The specification requires you to understand how temperature and pH affect enzyme function.

  • Temperature: As temperature increases, enzyme activity increases because molecules move faster and collide more frequently with the substrate. Above the optimum temperature, the enzyme denatures: the active site changes shape so the substrate can no longer fit, and the reaction rate drops sharply.
  • pH: Each enzyme has an optimum pH. Moving away from this optimum in either direction alters the shape of the active site, reducing activity. Extreme pH values cause denaturation.

Movement of substances into and out of cells

Factors that affect the rate of diffusion include surface area to volume ratio (larger surface area increases rate), distance (shorter distance increases rate), temperature (higher temperature increases rate) and concentration gradient (steeper gradient increases rate).

Common mistake: Saying osmosis is "the movement of water from high concentration to low concentration." Osmosis is specifically the movement of water across a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution (high water concentration) to a more concentrated solution (lower water concentration). The membrane and the direction must both be stated.

Nutrition

Nutrition in the Double Award specification covers both plant nutrition (photosynthesis) and human nutrition (diet and digestion). This is one of the most content-heavy topics in the entire edexcel biology paper.

Photosynthesis

The word equation: carbon dioxide + water (+ light energy) -> glucose + oxygen

The balanced symbol equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2

Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose. It takes place in chloroplasts. Three factors affect the rate: light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature. Each can act as a limiting factor.

The leaf is adapted for photosynthesis: it is thin (short diffusion distance), has a large surface area (maximum light absorption), contains palisade cells packed with chloroplasts near the upper surface, and has stomata on the lower surface for gas exchange.

Plants also need mineral ions: magnesium ions for making chlorophyll, and nitrate ions for making amino acids.

Human nutrition

A balanced diet includes carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins (A, C, D), minerals (calcium, iron), water and dietary fibre. Energy requirements vary with activity level, age and pregnancy.

The alimentary canal processes food through ingestion, digestion, absorption and egestion. Key digestive enzymes include:

  • Amylase (and maltase): breaks starch down into glucose. Produced in the salivary glands and pancreas.
  • Proteases: break proteins down into amino acids. Pepsin works in the stomach (acidic conditions).
  • Lipases: break lipids down into fatty acids and glycerol.

Bile is produced by the liver, stored in the gall bladder, and released into the small intestine. It neutralises stomach acid (creating alkaline conditions for intestinal enzymes) and emulsifies lipids (breaks large fat droplets into smaller ones, increasing the surface area for lipase action).

The small intestine is adapted for absorption: villi increase the surface area, each villus has a thin wall (one cell thick), a good blood supply, and lacteals for absorbing fatty acids and glycerol. Food moves through the gut by peristalsis, rhythmic muscular contractions of the gut wall.

Examiners value precise scientific language. "The particles move faster" is weaker than "the particles have greater kinetic energy, so a higher proportion exceed the activation energy on collision." Revision tip: After finishing a topic in one science, write a single sentence connecting it to each of the other two. If you cannot, that gap is worth revisiting.
