Tip: Examiners frequently present two unlabelled population pyramids and ask you to identify which represents an LIC and which an HIC. Urbanisation

Urbanisation refers to the increasing proportion of a population living in towns and cities. It is driven by rural-to-urban migration and by natural increase within urban areas. In many LICs and MICs, urbanisation is occurring rapidly as people move to cities seeking employment and services.

Consequences of rapid urbanisation include:

  • Growth of informal settlements (slums) with inadequate housing, sanitation, and clean water
  • Increased pressure on urban infrastructure (roads, waste management, energy supply)
  • Environmental degradation: air and water pollution, loss of green space, urban heat island effect
  • Social challenges: overcrowding, crime, inequality, strain on health and education services

Common Mistake: Students sometimes treat urbanisation and migration as identical concepts. They are not. Urbanisation is a broader process measured as the percentage of a country's population living in urban areas. Managing Human Population Size

  2. Education, particularly for girls and women - there is a well-documented correlation between female education levels and declining birth rates. Educated women tend to marry later, have fewer children, and have greater economic independence.
  3. Economic development - as countries industrialise and incomes rise, birth rates tend to fall naturally. This pattern is known as the demographic transition. Improved living standards reduce the economic incentive for large families.
  4. Government policies - some countries have implemented direct population policies. China's one-child policy (1979-2015) is the most well-known example, though it raised significant ethical concerns around personal freedom and human rights. Other countries offer financial incentives for smaller families or disincentives for larger ones.
  5. Improved healthcare and reduced infant mortality - when parents are confident their children will survive to adulthood, the incentive to have many children diminishes. This is why healthcare investment and population stabilisation go hand in hand.

Approaches to Managing an Ageing Population

In HICs where birth rates have fallen below replacement level, the challenge is reversed: how to support a growing elderly population with a shrinking workforce.

Strategies include:

  • Raising the retirement age to keep people in the workforce longer
  • Encouraging immigration of working-age people to boost the labour force
  • Providing incentives for higher birth rates (parental leave, childcare subsidies, tax benefits for families)
  • Investing in automation and productivity improvements to compensate for a smaller workforce
  • Reforming pension and healthcare systems to remain sustainable with a larger elderly proportion
Tip: When discussing population management in an exam, always acknowledge the ethical dimension. Policies that restrict family size can conflict with individual rights and freedoms. Exam answers that demonstrate awareness of this tension score higher than those that simply list strategies without reflection.

Worked Example: Interpreting a Population Pyramid

Question: The population pyramid for Country X shows a very wide base that narrows sharply with each age group above 15. The pyramid for Country Y has an almost rectangular shape with a slight bulge in the 40-60 age range and a relatively wide top. Compare the likely population characteristics of Country X and Country Y. [6 marks]

Model Answer:

Country X has a high birth rate, indicated by the wide base of its pyramid (1 mark). The sharp narrowing suggests a high death rate and low life expectancy, meaning many people die before reaching old age (1 mark). This structure is typical of an LIC with limited healthcare, high infant mortality, and a youthful population (1 mark).

Country Y has a low birth rate, shown by its narrow base (1 mark). The rectangular shape indicates that most people survive into old age, suggesting a low death rate and high life expectancy (1 mark). The bulge in the 40-60 range and wide top are characteristic of an HIC with good healthcare, pension systems, and possibly below-replacement fertility (1 mark).

Tip: Notice how each point in the model answer is a separate, distinct idea worth one mark. In a 6-mark question, you need six clearly identifiable points. Avoid writing lengthy paragraphs that repeat the same idea in different words.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the errors that appear most frequently in student responses on population questions:

  1. Confusing population density with population distribution. Density is a number (people per km2). Distribution is a pattern (where they live and why). The two are related but not interchangeable.
  2. Describing a population pyramid without interpreting it. Simply stating "the base is wide" earns nothing. You must explain what this means: "a wide base indicates a high birth rate."
  3. Forgetting migration when discussing population change. Natural increase (births minus deaths) is only part of the picture. Net migration can significantly alter a country's population size and structure.
  4. Treating all LICs or all HICs as identical. There is enormous variation within these categories. Use phrases such as "typically" or "generally" rather than making absolute statements.
  5. Ignoring ethical considerations in population management questions. The examiner expects you to recognise that policies restricting family size raise human rights concerns.
  6. Using vague language. Statements like "the population is big" or "there are lots of young people" lack precision. Refer to specific rates, ratios, and demographic indicators by name.
