What you are walking into

IGCSE Biology Paper 1 is the Core multiple-choice paper. It carries 40 marks, lasts 45 minutes, and every question has four options: A, B, C or D. There is no negative marking. That last point matters more than most students realise: if you leave a question blank, you score zero. If you guess, you have a 25% chance of picking up a free mark. Never leave an answer blank.

The 40 questions cover the entire IGCSE Core syllabus, roughly in syllabus order. That means the first few questions tend to come from Characteristics and classification of living organisms, and the last few from Human influences on ecosystems. Knowing this pattern lets you anticipate which topic area you are in, even when a question feels unfamiliar.

Time management: the numbers that matter

You have 45 minutes for 40 questions. That gives you roughly one minute and seven seconds per question. Some will take 15 seconds. Others will take two minutes. The goal is not to spend equal time on every question but to manage the total budget so you finish with five minutes to spare for review.

Exam tip: The biggest time trap is getting stuck on one question and burning three or four minutes on it. That is three or four easy questions at the end of the paper that you never reach. Move on. Come back later.

How to read an MCQ stem

The stem is the question itself, the bit above the four options. Most marks are lost not because students lack knowledge, but because they misread what the stem is actually asking. Three habits will fix this:

  1. Identify the command word. "Which" asks you to pick the correct option. "Which is not" asks you to pick the wrong one. Missing that single word "not" flips the entire question.
  2. Underline the subject. If the stem says "Which statement about osmosis is correct?" the subject is osmosis. Every option you consider must be evaluated against osmosis, not diffusion, not active transport.
  3. Watch for qualifiers. Words like "always," "never," "all," and "only" make a statement much harder to be true. "Enzymes always work best at 37 degrees Celsius" is false because different enzymes have different optimum temperatures. The word "always" is the trap.

The elimination technique

You do not need to know the right answer to get the mark. You need to know which answers are wrong. Suppose a question asks which substance is transported by phloem. The options are:

  • A - Water
  • B - Sucrose
  • C - Oxygen
  • D - Carbon dioxide

Even if you are unsure, you can probably eliminate C and D because you know gases are exchanged at the lungs and leaves, not transported through vascular tissue. That takes you from a 25% guess to a 50% guess between A and B. If you then recall that xylem carries water, phloem must carry the other one: sucrose. The answer is B.

This is the process: eliminate the obviously wrong, then reason between what remains. It works on almost every biology MCQ because the four options are usually structured with two plausible answers and two distractors.

Exam tip: Physically cross out eliminated options on the question paper. It stops your eye drifting back to them and makes the real choice clearer.

Common traps in biology MCQs

Cambridge examiners use a small number of predictable trap patterns. Once you recognise them, they lose their power.

The "not" or "except" reversal

"Which of the following is not a function of the liver?" Three options will be correct functions. You need the one that is wrong. Students who skim the stem pick a correct function and move on, losing the mark. Underline "not" every time you see it.

The close-synonym swap

Two options look almost identical but differ in one word. For example: "Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up reactions" versus "Enzymes are biological catalysts that slow down reactions." Both sound scientific. Only one is right. Read every word.

The correct-but-incomplete answer

Option A might say "The heart pumps blood." Option B might say "The heart pumps blood around the body through blood vessels." Both are true, but B is more complete. Cambridge tends to reward the most precise answer.

The absolute-word trap

Statements containing "all," "always," "never," or "only" are usually wrong in biology because living systems have exceptions. "All enzymes work best at pH 7" is false because pepsin in the stomach works best at pH 2. If an option uses an absolute word, treat it with suspicion.

Unit and scale errors

Questions about magnification or measurement sometimes offer answers in different units. One option might be 0.05 mm and another 50 micrometres. These are the same value. If you do not spot the unit conversion, you might pick one and reject the other for no reason. Always check the units.

Topics that appear most often

Paper 1 can test anything on the Core syllabus, but certain topics appear in almost every past paper session. If you are short on revision time, prioritise these:

  • Cell structure - identifying organelles, comparing plant and animal cells
  • Enzymes - lock and key model, effect of temperature and pH, denaturation
  • Transport in plants - xylem versus phloem, transpiration
  • Food tests - matching reagents to nutrients (iodine for starch, Benedict's for reducing sugars, biuret for protein)
  • The heart and circulatory system - chambers, blood vessels, double circulation
  • Photosynthesis and respiration equations - both word and symbol equations
  • Classification - five kingdoms, dichotomous keys, binomial naming
  • Human influences on ecosystems - eutrophication sequence, conservation methods

These topics are not more important than others, but they lend themselves well to the MCQ format because they have clear factual answers. A question asking you to pick the correct equation for photosynthesis has exactly one right answer and three wrong ones. Examiners find that easy to write, so they write it often.

How to use past papers properly

Cambridge IGCSE past papers are the single most effective revision tool for Paper 1. But most students use them badly. They sit down, answer 40 questions, check the mark scheme, note their score, and move on. That is half a revision strategy. Here is the full version:

  1. Do the paper under timed conditions. Set a timer for 45 minutes. No notes, no textbook, no phone. This trains your pacing.
  2. Mark it using the mark scheme. Cambridge publishes mark schemes alongside past papers. Use them.
  3. Build an error log. For every question you got wrong, write down three things: the question number, the topic it tested, and why your answer was wrong. "I confused xylem with phloem" is useful. "I got it wrong" is not.
  4. Review the error log after three papers. Patterns will emerge. If you have missed three enzyme questions in a row, that is your weak topic. Go back to your notes on enzymes before doing another paper.
  5. Re-do old papers after two weeks. If you still get the same questions wrong, the knowledge has not stuck. Change your revision method for that topic.
Exam tip: Keep your error log in a dedicated notebook or spreadsheet. Over five or six past papers, it becomes a personalised revision guide that shows you exactly where your marks are hiding.

What examiners actually want

MCQ papers are machine-marked, so there is no room for interpretation. The mark scheme has one correct answer per question. That said, understanding what examiners are testing helps you approach questions more confidently.

  • Recall questions test whether you know a fact. "What is the function of the ribosome?" You either know it or you do not. These are fast marks if you have revised.
  • Application questions give you a scenario and ask you to apply your knowledge. "A plant is kept in the dark for 48 hours. What happens to the starch content of its leaves?" You need to connect darkness to no photosynthesis to no glucose production to starch being used up.
  • Data interpretation questions show you a table or graph and ask you to read it. The biology knowledge needed is usually simple; the skill being tested is whether you can extract information accurately. Read axis labels. Check units. Look at the trend, not just one data point.

Roughly half the paper is recall, a quarter is application, and a quarter is data interpretation. If you only revise facts, you are leaving a quarter of the paper to chance.

Common mistakes that cost marks

  1. Leaving questions blank. There is no penalty for guessing. A blank answer scores zero. A random guess scores 0.25 marks on average. Always fill in something.
  2. Changing correct answers. Research on MCQ exams consistently shows that first instincts are right more often than changed answers. Only change an answer if you have a specific reason, such as spotting a misread word in the stem.
  3. Spending too long on hard questions. One difficult question is worth the same as one easy question: one mark. Do not sacrifice three easy marks trying to crack one tough one.
  4. Ignoring the "not" or "except" in a stem. This is the single most common reason for losing marks on questions where the student actually knew the content.
  5. Confusing similar terms. Respiration is not breathing. Excretion is not egestion. Antibiotics are not antibodies. Growth is a permanent increase in size and dry mass, not just getting bigger temporarily. These distinctions appear in at least two or three questions per paper.
  6. Rushing the answer sheet transfer. If you answer on the question paper first and then transfer to the answer sheet, misaligning one row means every subsequent answer lands on the wrong question. Check alignment every ten questions.

The last five minutes

When the clock shows five minutes remaining, stop working on new questions. Use this time for three specific checks:

  1. Scan for blanks. Run your finger down the answer sheet. Every row should have a mark. Fill in any gaps with your best guess.
  2. Check flagged questions. If you marked any for review during the first pass, look at them now. Sometimes the answer to a later question triggers your memory about an earlier one.
  3. Verify answer sheet alignment. Confirm that question 40's answer is on row 40. If you transferred answers in batches, this is where misalignment shows up.
Exam tip: Resist the temptation to second-guess answers in the final minutes. Change an answer only if you can point to a factual error in your original reasoning. Nervous last-minute changes lose more marks than they gain.

Building your revision plan around Paper 1

Start your IGCSE Biology past paper practice at least six weeks before the exam. Here is a practical schedule:

The error log is the engine of this plan. Without it, you repeat the same mistakes across every paper and your score plateaus. With it, you systematically close your knowledge gaps and your score climbs.

Quick-fire practice prompts

  1. Set a timer for 10 minutes and answer 10 random MCQs from a past paper. Did you finish with time to spare?
  2. Take a past paper you have already completed. Cover the answers and redo only the questions you got wrong last time. How many have you fixed?
  3. Pick a topic from your error log. Read your notes on it for 15 minutes, then immediately attempt five MCQs on that topic. This trains recall under pressure.
  4. Try answering five MCQs using only elimination, without looking at the "right" answer first. Cross out what you know is wrong, then pick from what remains.
  5. Practise transferring answers to a blank answer grid. Time yourself. Accuracy matters more than speed here.
