The Lion and the Jewel

The Lion and the Jewel (1963) is a comic play by the Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, set in the small Yoruba village of Ilujinle. The play dramatises a contest between two suitors for the hand of Sidi, the village belle: Lakunle, a young, Western-educated schoolteacher who despises traditional customs, and Baroka, the ageing but wily village chief (Bale) who embodies the shrewdness and vitality of traditional authority.

Structured in three parts named after the times of day - Morning, Noon and Night - the play traces Sidi's journey from initial vanity (fuelled by a magazine photographer's pictures of her) through Lakunle's clumsy courtship to Baroka's cunning seduction. In the end, Sidi chooses Baroka over Lakunle, recognising that the old chief's vigour, cunning and rootedness in tradition outweigh Lakunle's hollow modernity. The play is not a simple endorsement of tradition over modernity but a satirical exploration of both, showing that Lakunle's Westernisation is superficial and self-serving while Baroka's traditionalism, though patriarchal, is adaptive and life-affirming.

For the WAEC SSCE examination, this is a set text for African Drama. Students are expected to analyse character, theme, dramatic technique and Soyinka's use of Yoruba cultural elements including mime, dance, music and proverbs.
