Antony and Cleopatra

Antony and Cleopatra (c. 1606-07) is one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies. It dramatises the passionate love between the Roman triumvir Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, set against the struggle for control of the Roman Empire. Antony, one of the three rulers of Rome, is caught between political duty and his consuming desire for Cleopatra. His rival, the cold and calculating Octavius Caesar, exploits Antony's absence from Rome to consolidate power.

Setting

The play sweeps across the ancient Mediterranean world, moving rapidly between Rome and Egypt, with scenes in Athens, Misenum, and at the sea-battle of Actium. These locations embody opposed values: Rome represents duty, discipline, austerity and military honour; Egypt represents pleasure, sensuality, fertility and theatrical display. Antony's tragedy unfolds in his restless movement between these two worlds.

The central movement

Recalled from Egypt by political crisis, Antony marries Caesar's sister Octavia to seal an alliance, only to abandon her and return to Cleopatra. War follows. At the naval battle of Actium, Cleopatra's fleet flees and Antony follows her, destroying his military reputation. Defeated and believing Cleopatra dead after a false report, Antony falls on his sword. Cleopatra, refusing to be paraded through Rome as Caesar's captive, dies by the bite of an asp. In death, the lovers achieve a grandeur the political world could not give them.
