Overview

The Lion and the Jewel (1963) is a comic play by the Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, set in the small Yoruba village of Ilujinle. It dramatises the rivalry between Baroka, the ageing but cunning Bale (village chief), and Lakunle, a young, Western-educated schoolteacher, for the hand of Sidi, the village belle whose photograph has appeared in a Lagos magazine, making her famous.

The central conflict

Lakunle represents modernity, Western ideas and book-learning. He refuses to pay the traditional bride-price and lectures Sidi about 'civilisation'. Baroka, the 'Lion of Ilujinle', represents tradition, cunning and Yoruba cultural power. Through three movements, Morning, Noon and Night, Soyinka stages their contest. Baroka ultimately wins Sidi by a combination of persuasion, deception and virility, spreading a false rumour of his impotence to lure Sidi into overconfidence. When Sidi discovers she has been tricked and seduced, she chooses to marry Baroka rather than accept Lakunle's offer of a bride-price-free wedding.

Key concerns

The play explores tradition versus modernity, the politics of marriage and bride-price, the nature of true strength and wisdom, the role of women in a changing society, and the seductive power of both old and new worlds. Soyinka treats these themes with comedy, satire, and elaborate mime and dance sequences rooted in Yoruba performance traditions, avoiding a simple verdict in favour of either tradition or modernity.
