Overview

Redemption Road (2008) by Liberian writer Elma Shaw is a powerful novel set in the aftermath of Liberia's devastating civil wars (1989-2003). It follows Bendu Lewis, a young Americo-Liberian woman who survived a year of captivity under rebel fighters, as she attempts to rebuild her life in post-war Monrovia. Working as the founder of Peace in Practice (PIP), a trauma counselling centre for war-affected women, Bendu helps others confront their pain while concealing her own harrowing past.

The novel traces multiple strands: Bendu's deepening friendship with Calvin Daniels, a journalist haunted by witnessing the 1980 coup; the menacing return of Commander Cobra (Terrance Clarke), the warlord who held Bendu captive, now respectably married to her own sister Siatta; and the parallel story of Moses Varney, a human rights lawyer fighting for justice in a society that prefers to forget. Through flashbacks, Shaw reveals the full horror of Bendu's wartime ordeal: her grandmother's death, forced recruitment, executions she was compelled to witness, and the sexual violence she endured.

With a foreword by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Redemption Road confronts the tensions between forgiveness and justice, silence and disclosure, personal healing and national reconciliation. It asks whether true peace is possible without accountability, and whether survivors can reclaim their futures without first confronting their pasts.
