Path of Lucas

Path of Lucas (2015) by Susanne Bellefeuille is an emotionally charged novel that chronicles the life of Lucas Clarkson, a Canadian farmer's son whose journey from a rural Ontario upbringing through love, sacrifice, loss and resilience forms the heart of the narrative. The story is framed by a present-day crisis: Lucas's daughter, Lucy, lies in a coma after a devastating car accident, and Lucas sits at her bedside telling her the story of his life, hoping his voice will bring her back.

Through Lucas's narration, we follow his idyllic childhood on his father John's farm near Alexandria, Ontario, his first meeting with the beautiful and shy Isabelle Bourgeois, a French-Canadian girl from a neighbouring farm, and their courtship across a language barrier. Lucas and Isabelle marry young and start a family, but their path is marked by hardship: dangerous childbirths that nearly kill Isabelle, the sacrifice of Lucas's dream of becoming a mechanic to return to the family farm after his father's illness, the devastating loss of their son Richard to cancer, and ultimately the sudden death of Isabelle herself from a heart attack at only fifty-three.

The novel culminates with Lucy awakening from her coma, only for Lucas to suffer a fatal heart attack moments later. The recurring motifs of monarch butterflies and rose-breasted grosbeaks suggest that loved ones are reunited in death. Based on the true story of the author's father, Roger Bellefeuille, the novel is a tribute to parental love, resilience and the enduring bonds of family.
