The Whale Rider

The Whale Rider (1987, revised 2003) is a novel by Witi Ihimaera set in Whangara, a small Maori coastal settlement on the East Coast of New Zealand. It tells the story of Kahu (Kahutia Te Rangi), the eldest great-grandchild of chief Koro Apirana, who is rejected by her grandfather because she is female. According to Maori tradition, leadership descends through the eldest male line from the ancestor Paikea, who rode a whale from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. Kahu must prove that the mantle of leadership can pass to a girl.

Setting

The novel moves between the coastal village of Whangara, with its meeting house crowned by the carving of Paikea on his whale, and the vast southern ocean where the ancient bull whale leads his herd. The parallel narratives of the human and whale worlds converge in a climactic stranding that tests the tribe's spiritual connection to the sea.

The central movement

The novel follows Kahu from birth through childhood as she endures her grandfather's rejection while demonstrating extraordinary gifts: an instinctive connection with the ocean, the ability to communicate with marine creatures, and an unwavering love for Koro Apirana despite his coldness. When a sacred whale beaches itself at Whangara and the men cannot persuade it to return to the sea, Kahu climbs onto the whale and rides it back into the ocean, fulfilling the prophecy of Paikea's last spear and proving herself the rightful leader.
