The Joy Luck Club

The Joy Luck Club (1989) is Amy Tan's debut novel, a mosaic of sixteen interconnected stories told by four Chinese-born mothers and their four American-born daughters. The mothers - Suyuan Woo, An-mei Hsu, Lindo Jong and Ying-ying St. Clair - emigrated from China to San Francisco in the years following the Second World War, carrying with them traumatic pasts they struggle to communicate. Their daughters - Jing-mei (June) Woo, Rose Hsu Jordan, Waverly Jong and Lena St. Clair - are thoroughly American, caught between the culture they inhabit and the one their mothers insist they inherit.

Structure

The novel is divided into four sections, each opened by a short parable. The first and last sections contain the mothers' stories; the two middle sections contain the daughters'. Jing-mei Woo narrates in place of her recently deceased mother, Suyuan, bridging both generations. Each story stands alone as a complete narrative but gains depth from its echoes and contrasts with the others. The structure mirrors a mah jong game: four players, four rounds, each taking a turn.
