Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet (written about 1595) is Shakespeare's most celebrated love tragedy. It tells the story of two young people from feuding families in Verona - Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet - who fall in love at first sight, marry in secret, and are destroyed by the hatred that surrounds them. Their deaths finally reconcile their warring families, making the play both a passionate love story and a devastating critique of the violence bred by inherited grudges.

Setting

The action takes place over four days in Verona, with a brief scene in Mantua. The play moves between the public streets where the feud erupts in violence, the private spaces of the Capulet house and garden where love develops in secret, Friar Lawrence's cell where plans are made and marriages performed, and the Capulet tomb where the tragedy reaches its climax. The contrast between public conflict and private intimacy drives the play's dramatic structure.

The central movement

The Prologue announces that the lovers are 'star-cross'd' and 'death-mark'd', creating dramatic irony that hangs over every moment of happiness. Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet feast, declare their love in the balcony scene, and marry in secret. Tybalt kills Mercutio; Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished. Juliet takes a sleeping potion to avoid marrying Paris; Romeo, believing her dead, poisons himself; Juliet wakes, finds Romeo dead, and stabs herself. The Prince declares that 'All are punish'd.'

Why it matters for the exam

For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Literature, Romeo and Juliet is a Component 2/3 Literary Heritage text. Component 2 is an open book examination (Section B, 30-mark essay, AO1+AO2+AO4).
