A View from the Bridge

A View from the Bridge (1955, revised 1956) is a two-act tragedy by Arthur Miller, set in the Italian-American community of Red Hook, Brooklyn, during the 1950s. The longshoreman Eddie Carbone lives with his wife Beatrice and her orphaned niece Catherine, whom he has raised as his own daughter. When Beatrice's cousins Marco and Rodolfo arrive illegally from Italy, Eddie's world begins to unravel. His unacknowledged desire for Catherine collides with Rodolfo's courtship of the young woman, driving Eddie toward a betrayal that destroys him.

The central movement

The play traces Eddie's descent from a respected, hard-working family man into a figure of communal shame. His growing jealousy of Rodolfo leads him to consult the lawyer Alfieri, who warns him that no law can help him. Unable to accept Catherine's independence, Eddie reports the cousins to the Immigration Bureau, violating the community's most sacred code. Marco publicly accuses Eddie of destroying his family, and Eddie demands the restoration of his name. In the final confrontation, Eddie draws a knife but Marco turns the blade against him, and Eddie dies in Beatrice's arms.

Why it matters for the exam

For Pearson Edexcel Component 2 Section A (Modern Drama), this is an open book examination with a 30-mark essay. You must analyse how Miller presents characters, themes and dramatic techniques. The play's examination of honour, betrayal, masculinity, immigration and the conflict between personal desire and communal law makes it rich territory for essay questions.
