Macbeth

Macbeth (written about 1606) is Shakespeare's shortest and most intense tragedy. It tells the story of a brave Scottish general, Macbeth, who receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and urged on by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan and seizes the throne. The play traces his rapid descent from honoured warrior to paranoid tyrant, haunted by guilt and driven to further murders, while Lady Macbeth's own conscience destroys her from within.

Setting

The action takes place in eleventh-century Scotland and briefly in England. It moves between the open heath where the witches deliver their prophecies, Macbeth's castle at Inverness where Duncan is murdered, the royal palace at Forres and finally Dunsinane, where Macbeth makes his last stand. The landscape of storm, darkness and blood mirrors the moral disorder that Macbeth's crime releases.

The central movement

The play follows a clear arc of rise and fall. Macbeth begins as a loyal subject who defeats Scotland's enemies; temptation enters through the witches' prophecy and Lady Macbeth's persuasion; the murder of Duncan plunges Scotland into tyranny; Macbeth orders the killing of Banquo and the Macduff family; Lady Macbeth collapses under guilt; and the forces of justice, led by Malcolm and Macduff, overthrow the tyrant. Malcolm is crowned and order is restored.
