Never Let Me Go

Never Let Me Go is Kazuo Ishiguro's sixth novel, published in 2005. It is a quietly devastating work of speculative fiction set in an alternate-history England in the late 1990s, narrated by Kathy H., a thirty-one-year-old carer looking back on her life at Hailsham, an apparently idyllic English boarding school that is, in reality, a residential programme for human clones bred to donate their vital organs.

Setting

The novel moves through three locations that mirror the stages of the clones' managed lives: Hailsham, a sheltered country school where the children are educated, encouraged in art and kept in partial ignorance of their fate; the Cottages, a cluster of run-down farm buildings where the young adults live loosely supervised before entering the donation programme; and various recovery centres across England, where donors undergo successive organ extractions until they complete - the novel's euphemism for death.

The central movement

Kathy recalls her childhood friendships with the volatile, creative Tommy and the manipulative, insecure Ruth. Through fragmented memories, she gradually reveals the truth the guardians half-concealed: the students are clones whose sole purpose is organ donation. A rumour persists that Hailsham couples who can prove they are truly in love may win a deferral - a postponement of donations. After Ruth's deathbed confession that she deliberately kept Kathy and Tommy apart, the two seek out their former guardian Madame and the head teacher Miss Emily, only to learn that deferrals never existed. Tommy completes after his fourth donation. Kathy, alone, drives to Norfolk and imagines all her losses washing up against a fence at the edge of an empty field.
